About Treviglio...

Treviglio is an ancient municipality, now a city, with almost 29,000 inhabitants.  It is pleasantly situated in the Lombardy region of northern Italy between the lakes and mountains, 30 km east of Milan and 20 km south of Bergamo.  It is an important railway junction on the Milan - Venice line.

Treviglio is famous for the shrine of the Weeping Madonna.  In 1522 an image of the Madonna and Child wept tears when a French general was about to sack the town.  Hearing of the miracle, he withdrew his troops and the town was saved!   The 500th anniversary of the miracle is narrated here in Italian with English subtitles.

The economy was mainly agricultural well in to the 20th century, but today industry has developed in the mechanics, electrical and chemical sectors.
